Hill walkers can greatly benefit from a good set of binoculars. Once you've attained the summit few things can be better than spending half an hour admiring the views to the neighbouring peaks and valleys after having downed a sandwich or two! These views are surely deserving of a quality pair of binoculars.
But mountaineers' binoculars don't have an easy life. Often squashed at the bottom of a rucksack and sometimes given a soaking or two for good measure. They must be solidly constructed and damp proof. And while we'd all love a pair of 25x100s at the top few would want to carry bulky, heavy items - so lightness is vital.
The following models are often to be found in my own backpack.
Cairn Toul and the Pools of Dee on a spring day.
