E30 advice please

Postby Mordan » Tue May 13, 2008 10:12 am

I come here because I remember how fanatic you are about E30 318i
I'm looking for another car because I got screwed with my 518i. head cylinder gasket problem. timing belt was changed at 169 000 (i saw it on the white sticker), but a mechanics told me the water pump must have failed and engine overheated.

Car Pass History is
- 24 May 2004 : 164 402 km
169 000 km change timing belt according to sticker
- 23 June 2005: 174 338 kms
mechanics' guess: car accident or something: water pump failed. new radiator changed, new (badly fitted ?)water pump, belt misaligned with alternator). coolant leaking from radiator because radiator gets constantly beaten by the compression ripple from the engine.
- 21 March 2008 : 186 621 kms I buy the 518i.

Before I sort out the problems on the 518i I want to try the E30

I saw a 318i December 1987.
might buy it. she has 140 000 kms (less than 100k miles) on it. It has an heavy clutch pedal which bothers me and a missing bonnet protection.
number 28 on the pic. 9,10 and 11 are crap and must be replaced as well. dunno why but the E30s I have seen on ebay and in real life have that piece missing.. anybody knows why?

I realize the timing belt hasn't been changed on this 318i. (M40 engine like my 518i)
When the engine is started, there is a short hissing sound and then it disappeared. The V belt is new but without much tension.
This 318i drove 400kms in the last 6 years according to Carr Pass. What should I read between the lines?

Cheers!

Sorry to hear about the 518i.

It's unusual for the pump to fail on that engine, but not impossible.

Head gaskets can fail, it's a fact of life. When they do the important thing is not to let the engine overheat, if it does you can warp the aluminium cylinder head. If the head warps it'll need to be skimmed (normally about 50gbp).

If any components were wrongly fitted they'd cause the car to overheat. You'd notice this straight away. It would not cause the head gasket to fail without warning.

better check for its parts for defects and its history, esp. its engine. since it has a history of being overheated and its water pump failed...
