WINNER! We came 1st and 3rd in Sky at Night magazine's 10x50 group test! (The 7x50 and 10x50 are basically the same binocular) These were up against sets 3 or 4 times the price.
50mm binoculars are general purpose and suitable for most applications. They offer ample light gathering for most uses, are small enough to fit in your glove box, rucksack or panniers and easy to hold.
Our marine models not only have watertight seals but are nitrogen filled to avoid condensation. They're also a tougher construction than our normal 50mm and a bit heavier. They use denser BAK-4 prisms and level IV optical coatings, this is our highest level of optical performance and gives excellent results at dusk or in low light conditions. 5 layers of coating on every air-glass boundary all the way through the binocular!
These binoculars are shock proof to 20g. They are military specification (MIL-spec) passed for 1m metre of water for one hour. They are certified for operation from -40C to +50C and have passed a MIL-spec vibration test. Almost indestructible.
Because these are shock proof they are independent focus, you turn each eye individually to adjust them. There is no centre focus wheel. In practice this isn't a problem as they have a very wide range of focus.
We find this isn't a model that sells well on the internet, yet whenever we do country fairs or exhibitions they are our best seller! Once people try them and see what a bright, high resolution image they offer and are easily convinced of their merits.
They can be tripod mounted using our inexpensive L bracket but are easily light enough to hand hold for long periods. A tripod makes all binoculars easier to use, sadly not all of our competitors offer this facility on 50mm binoculars.
Compared to the 10x50s these have a lower power but wider field of view. The 7s are better for use on ships under about 50m in length or when maximum low light performance in needed. For astronomy I personally prefer the 7 to the 10.
These binoculars have fold down rubber eye cups, perfect for spectacle wearers.
